74 Cornelia Street

"...two-story and mansard roof frame dwelling, 40x40, on the northeast side of Cornelia street, 100 east of Bushwick avenue, for John Welz, to cost $10,000; and a similar dwelling, 200 feet east of Bushwick avenue, for Charles Zerweck, to cost the same..."1

The above description seems to refer to 74 Cornelia Street, which is located on the south side of Cornelia Street (possibly the southeast side). The lot is 100' by 100', and the property includes a two-story stable/garage with a tower at the rear of the lot. The building appears to roughly 40' square in plan. There is a mansard-roofed house directly across the street, but the lot is only 30' wide, and it is located 125' east of Bushwick Avenue.

Both Welz and Zerweck are listed in the 1897 Lain's directory as brewers, Welz living at 74 Cornelia Street and Zerweck at 1153 Putnam Avenue. Based on the information available, it does seem reasonable to assume that the building described above is Welz's home at 74 Cornelia Street and that the Zerweck mansion (which would have been immediately next door) was not constructed.
