Construction for the church began in 1836, under the direction of "an architect named King, who built several of the Protestant churches of this city". This likely refers to Gamiel King, who was prominent in this time. Sometime after 1863 the front of the church was redesigned and the spire was erected. At about this time, possibly as part of the same project, the interior of the church was redone. This work included a new altar designed by Patrick Keely.
