Ibert Brewery

The Frank Ibert Brewery was located on the east side of Evergreen Avenue, between Linden and Grove Streets. A two-story brick structure still remains at the southeast corner of Evergreen and Grove. In 1889, Theobald Engelhardt prepared plans for a three-story frame brewery, one-story brick boiler house, three-story frame machine house and three-story frame storage building.1 The main brewery building had a turreted corner tower and included a cafe on the ground floor and apartments above. The actual brewing probably took place elsewhere in the complex.

Franks Ibert (January 15, 1859 - January 15, 1911) was born in Brooklyn in 1859 and first partnered with Joseph Eppig in 1880 to establish Eppig & Ibert's Brewery, but soon left the business to Eppig. In 1891, Ibert opened his own brewery. The above building record therefore appears to correspond to the initial establishment of the brewery.2 Ibert was active in many German organizations, including the Arion Society, the Germania Mannerchor, the Eastern District Scheutzen Corps and the Eastern District Turn Verein; he was an active parishioner of St Barbara's Church. He married Mary Grammach in 1884.3 Ibert's mansion was located nearby at the corner Bushwick Avenue and Gates Avenue (which corner is open to debate - Brownstoner says it was the southwest corner, while the New-York Historical Society says it was the northwest corner (I am pretty sure it was the latter).
