Keeley [sic], architect, who numbers this as his three hundred and eighty fifth church edifice he has been engaged in building on this continent.

70 years on, all of the buildings in Berenice Abbott's photo of Graham and Metropolitan remain, but the view sure has changed. Amazingly, there is still a lot of architecture left behind many of our faux-clad buildings. Here, though, the cornices and tower have been lost.

Francis Berlenbach was active in Brooklyn architecture starting in the 1870s. He was the son of Joseph Berlenbach, a local carpenter/builder and Francis may have received his training as a carpenter as well.

Theobald Mark Engelhardt (1851-1935) was one of Brooklyn’s most prolific architects, designing thousands of structures that reflect a full range of building types, from factories and churches to commercial establishments and residences. Born in Brooklyn, his father was Philip Engelhardt, a political refugee from Baden who emigrated to the United States along with his wife, father, and sisters after the failed political revolutions of 1848-49 in Germany.
